I have requested these together because I think they are related. Right now, I think it's only possible to make a line chart that follows a trend in the direction of the x-axis. It would be good if the lines can follow other patterns, for example if the trend is vertical or, in the case of a contour plot, multi-directional.
For a contour plot, I think it would work to have a different dimension for every contour, but you still need the ability to connect these points in a line that can be a polygon.
To illustrate what I mean by the y-axis trend line, please see the attached chart. We want to show this chart at a 90 degree angle, because (and please ignore the y axis label), the depth is on the x-axis. However, the trend we are wanting to observe is how the value changes with depth, so the only way to make the line is to put the depth on the x-axis. However, it's clearly more intuitive to have this on the y-axis purely because of the physical nature of the variable.
