Adopt database metadata into Preset’s semantic layer

What is the problem or goal the end user is trying to solve or accomplish?

The customer wants column and dataset descriptions from their database (Databricks) to be automatically incorporated into Preset’s semantic layer. This would ensure that their data is consistently documented and described within Preset, without requiring manual re-entry of metadata.

How are they solving it currently?

Currently, there is no way to automatically import or sync metadata descriptions from Databricks into Preset. Users have to manually add or update descriptions for datasets and columns within Preset’s semantic layer, which is time-consuming, error-prone, and difficult to maintain at scale.

What is the recommended solution by the Customer?

Allow Preset to adopt database metadata for datasets and columns directly from the connected database (Databricks, in this case). The customer suggests that this could happen either:

• When using the “Sync columns from source” function, or

• Automatically upon connecting new datasets.
